Match Preview
Bayern Munich begin their Champions League campaign at home to Bodø/Glimt with both sides carrying excellent form into Europe. Vincent Kompany’s team are unbeaten in nine matches, while the Norwegian champions arrive on an even longer run of 18 games without defeat across all competitions.
Bodø/Glimt secured their place in the league phase with a convincing 6-1 aggregate victory over NEC Nijmegen in the play-offs. After winning the first leg 3-1, Kjetil Knutsen’s side completed the job with a 3-0 home success in which Fredrik Bjørkan and Sondre Auklend were among the scorers.
Bayern’s recent numbers are equally imposing. They have won five and drawn one of their last six matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding only four, while their home record in this competition remains formidable. Bayern are unbeaten in their last 38 Champions League group or league-phase matches at the Allianz Arena, winning 36 of them.
The hosts also have an extraordinary record in European openers, winning the first match of each of their last 23 major European campaigns. They scored 43 Champions League goals last season, with Harry Kane contributing 14 and continuing a remarkable run that has seen him become the competition’s leading scorer since joining Bayern in 2023.
Bodø/Glimt, however, have already shown they belong at this level. In their debut Champions League campaign last season they reached the last 16 and won five consecutive matches, the longest streak by a team from outside Europe’s big five leagues since Ajax in 2021/22. Jens Petter Hauge also scored six times, a record for a player representing a Norwegian club in a single edition.
Even so, the scale of the task is obvious. Bayern have never lost to Norwegian opposition in eight previous major European meetings, and the combination of home advantage, attacking depth and Kane’s form makes them overwhelming favourites. Bodø/Glimt’s confidence and attacking identity should still ensure they arrive with ambition rather than simply trying to survive.
