Match Preview
NK Celje welcome Omonia Nicosia to Stadion Z’dežele looking to collect their first points of the Europa League league phase. Celje opened with a 2-0 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen, while Omonia made a perfect start by beating Celta Vigo 1-0 at home.
Celje struggled to create enough threat in Germany, managing only five shots, the second-lowest total of any team on matchday one. That continued a broader issue in Europe, with the Slovenian side now failing to score in four of their last seven major continental matches.
Their home record provides considerably more encouragement. Celje won three of their five Conference League matches at Stadion Z’dežele last season and prepared for this fixture with a 1-0 domestic victory over Aluminij, Milot Avdyli scoring the decisive goal after only 10 minutes.
Omonia arrive in stronger overall form, unbeaten in five matches across all competitions and having won four of their last six. Their latest outing brought an emphatic 3-0 away victory over Karmiotissa, with Luuk Brouwers, Muamer Tanković and Ľubomír Šatka scoring after the interval.
Henning Berg’s side also showed their defensive resilience against Celta, with Jure Balkovec scoring the only goal. Omonia now have the chance to win their opening two matches of a major European campaign for the first time since the 1985-86 season, although their away form during Europa League qualifying was less convincing.
There is little separating these teams on paper. Celje’s home advantage and the historical struggles of Cypriot clubs in Slovenia should help the hosts, but Omonia arrive with greater momentum and have looked more reliable at both ends in recent weeks.
