Two teams that have gatecrashed the top half of the Scottish Premiership in successive seasons, Falkirk and St Mirren, meet in Saturday afternoon's sole league match.

Falkirk failed to qualify for the last 16 of the Scottish League Cup, picking up seven points from a group containing Ayr United, Alloa Athletic, Edinburgh City and Stranraer. The Bairns were one of the surprise packages of the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership campaign as a newly promoted side, but an overhaul in playing personnel might be to their detriment as they aim to avoid a severe case of second season syndrome.

St Mirren had a crazy campaign, given they won the Scottish League Cup but maintained their Premiership status by the skin of their teeth. In defence of the trophy that they won last season, the Buddies beat Dumbarton, Cove Rangers and East Kilbride but defeat to Dunfermline didn't matter in the end as Saints secured their passage into the round of 16. Survival will most likely be the aim again, although they'll hope to surprise a few.

There were three away victories in these two teams' 2025/26 meetings, with the Bairns beaten twice by the Buddies at home before Saints squeezed past their hosts in Falkirk but it's difficult to separate the two teams on the opening weekend.
