Match Preview
Go Ahead Eagles return to De Adelaarshorst looking to protect a perfect home record after an extraordinary 3-3 draw at Utrecht, while Groningen arrive hoping to end a three-match winless run. Joseph Oosting’s side sit seventh with eight points from five games, one point and three places above Dick Lukkien’s visitors.
Go Ahead’s latest fixture unfolded across two days after crowd trouble forced the original game at Stadion Galgenwaard to be suspended. They had built a three-goal advantage before Utrecht mounted a remarkable comeback, with Dani de Wit and Matisse Didden scoring from set-pieces before Artem Stepanov converted a late penalty to complete the recovery.
The result again highlighted both sides of Go Ahead’s season so far. They have scored 14 goals in five league matches, averaging 2.8 per game, but have also conceded 12. Søren Tengstedt remains the standout attacker with four goals, while Tengstedt, Victor Edvardsen and Mathis Suray have each contributed two assists.
Groningen were also involved in a 2-2 draw last time out, sharing the points with Twente after all four goals arrived before half-time. Thom van Bergen and Tygo Land turned an early deficit into a 2-1 lead before Wout Weghorst equalised, with the second half becoming much more controlled after a frantic opening period.
Lukkien’s side have now taken just one point from their last three matches after opening with consecutive victories. They have conceded 12 goals in five games, including 10 across their last three, but still carry plenty of threat through Van Bergen and Brynjólfur Willumsson, who have both scored twice.
With both teams averaging more than two goals per game and neither showing much defensive consistency, another open contest looks likely. Go Ahead’s perfect home record gives them the stronger platform, but Groningen have enough attacking quality to exploit the same weaknesses Utrecht exposed last time out.
