Match Preview
FC Groningen and FC Twente meet at Euroborg level on six points but arriving in very different form. Dick Lukkien’s side have lost their last two matches after opening with consecutive victories, while Twente have responded to an opening defeat by winning back-to-back league games.
Groningen’s latest setback came in a 3-2 home defeat to Fortuna Sittard, despite controlling close to two-thirds of possession and attempting 17 shots. David van der Werff cancelled out an early Fortuna opener, but the hosts were repeatedly exposed in transition before a late Justin Hubner own goal gave them brief hope of a comeback.
The defeat followed a 5-1 loss at PSV and means Groningen have now conceded eight goals across their last two matches. Their attacking numbers remain respectable, with nine goals from four games, but only two of their 17 attempts against Fortuna were on target, highlighting the contrast between territorial dominance and actual threat.
Twente arrive in much stronger shape after beating Cambuur 4-1 away from home. Ruud Nijstad, Wout Weghorst, Marko Pjaca and Younes Taha all scored as John van den Brom’s side repeatedly exploited gaps through direct play, wide overloads and aggressive positioning between the lines.
That result took Twente to seven goals from three league matches, while they have now scored 14 times across their last five outings in all competitions. Their attack has also been well spread, with six different Eredivisie scorers and Sondre Ørjasæter already contributing two assists.
Recent history is firmly on the visitors’ side, with Twente unbeaten in their last 14 meetings with Groningen, winning seven and drawing seven. Groningen’s home advantage and attacking quality should make this competitive, but unless Lukkien’s side tighten their transition defence, Twente’s direct running and in-form frontline look well suited to exploiting the spaces they have been leaving behind.
