Match Preview
FC Groningen welcome PEC Zwolle to Euroborg looking to turn a pair of draws into a first victory in five matches, while the visitors arrive needing a response to the heaviest defeat in their history. Dick Lukkien’s side sit ninth with eight points from six games, whereas Zwolle are 16th on four points.
Groningen earned a 1-1 draw away to Go Ahead Eagles last time out despite spending much of the match under sustained pressure. Brynjólfur Willumsson gave them the lead with a powerful first-half strike before Søren Tengstedt equalised late, with goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen and centre-back Thijmen Blokzijl playing major roles in preserving a point.
The result extended Groningen’s winless run to four matches, but their resilience offered some positives. Willumsson now has four league goals and leads the side for shots on target per match, while Thom van Bergen remains their most productive creator with two assists.
Zwolle, by contrast, were overwhelmed in a 7-0 home defeat to Feyenoord, their heaviest loss on record. Henry van der Vegt’s side were repeatedly exposed by wide rotations, first-time combinations and aggressive counter-pressing, falling three goals behind before half-time and never recovering.
That collapse took Zwolle’s goals-against tally to 17 from six matches and left them with the second-worst defensive record in the division. They have, however, collected all four of their points away from home and remain unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Groningen, winning two and drawing six.
That head-to-head record gives Zwolle some encouragement, but their defensive structure must improve dramatically after last weekend. Groningen are not in particularly strong form themselves, yet their greater stability, Willumsson’s scoring threat and home advantage make this a good opportunity to end their winless run.
