Match Preview
Heerenveen welcome the Eredivisie leaders to the Abe Lenstra Stadion looking to end AZ’s perfect start to the campaign. Robin Veldman’s side sit 11th with five points from four matches, while Lee-Roy Echteld’s visitors have taken a maximum 12 points and already opened up one of the strongest goal differences in the division.
Heerenveen were held to a 2-2 draw away to Willem II last weekend after briefly turning the game around in the second half. Jacob Trenskow cancelled out Uriël van Aalst’s opener before Oliver Braude put the visitors 2-1 ahead, only for Devin Haen to equalise in the 82nd minute. Veldman’s side again showed resilience, but their inability to control the decisive moments prevented them from taking all three points.
Trenskow remains Heerenveen’s most productive attacker, with two goals and one assist, while Dylan Vente, Sam Kersten and Levi Smans have also contributed assists. Their broader form has produced nine goals across the last five matches, although the league return of five from four games suggests there is still room for greater efficiency in the final third.
AZ arrive in exceptional form after beating Go Ahead Eagles 5-2 at the AFAS Stadion. Dave Kwakman’s deflected effort opened the scoring before Ro-Zangelo Daal struck twice, with Lewis Schouten and Mateo Chávez also finding the net. The result extended AZ’s winning sequence to seven matches across all competitions and their unbeaten run to 16.
The leaders have combined attacking variety with defensive control, scoring 13 goals in four Eredivisie matches while conceding only three. Daal leads the team with three goals, while Chávez has already supplied three assists and remains a major attacking influence from left-back. That balance has made Echteld’s side difficult to disrupt whether playing at home or away.
Recent meetings have tended to produce a winner, with none of the last five ending level. Heerenveen have enough attacking quality to make AZ work, especially at home, but the visitors’ form, depth and ability to attack through both central and wide areas give them the stronger platform.
