Match Preview
Inter Milan and Club Brugge meet at San Siro as both sides still search for their first Champions League points in the league phase. Inter opened with a 2-1 defeat away to Real Madrid, while Brugge lost 3-2 at home to Aston Villa.
Inter’s Madrid result extended a difficult European run, with Cristian Chivu’s side now having lost three consecutive Champions League matches for the second time in their history. They also conceded nine big chances despite having 64.4% possession, highlighting the defensive vulnerability beneath their control of the ball.
Their domestic response has been far more convincing. Inter are unbeaten in three matches since that defeat and prepared for this fixture with a 3-0 home win over Parma, scoring all three goals inside the opening half-hour through Petar Sučić, Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Marcus Thuram.
Club Brugge have also reacted positively to their opening European loss, winning three consecutive matches in all competitions. Their latest was an emphatic 4-1 away win over RAAL La Louvière, with Hugo Vetlesen, Jan Virgili, Nicolò Tresoldi and Félix Lemaréchal all finding the net.
The Belgians carry significant attacking momentum, having scored in 29 consecutive matches, but their defensive record in Europe is far less reassuring. Brugge have conceded at least three goals in seven of their last nine Champions League matches, including all three of the previous.
This is the first competitive meeting between the clubs, and both arrive with reasons for optimism going forward but clear defensive concerns in Europe. Inter’s 11-match unbeaten home run in all competitions and greater individual quality make them favourites, although Brugge’s recent scoring record suggests the hosts are unlikely to have things entirely their own way.
