Match Preview
Lech Poznań welcome Bayer Leverkusen to the Enea Stadion looking to recover from a difficult opening night in the Europa League. The Polish side were beaten 4-0 away by Crystal Palace, while Leverkusen began with a controlled 2-0 home victory over Celje.
Lech’s defeat in London continued a difficult sequence in this competition, with four consecutive Europa League losses in which they have conceded 12 goals and scored only once. Their home form offers considerably more encouragement, however, with six successive victories in all competitions and wins in both Europa League qualifying fixtures there this season.
Niels Frederiksen’s side also arrive on the back of an emphatic 4-1 away win over Śląsk Wrocław, with Patrik Wålemark making a decisive impact from the bench by scoring twice in three second-half minutes. That result highlighted the attacking threat Lech can carry when games become stretched.
Leverkusen have been much more consistent in Europe, winning 15 of their last 17 Europa League group or league-phase matches and the previous seven in succession. They have also scored in 11 consecutive games in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last five.
Their latest Bundesliga outing produced a dramatic 4-3 victory away to Mainz, where Robert Andrich and Patrik Schick scored inside the opening nine minutes before Jarell Quansah and Moussa Diaby contributed after the break. The four goals again demonstrated the variety of attacking routes available to Carles Martínez’s side, even if conceding three exposed some defensive vulnerability.
Lech’s excellent home run should prevent this from being straightforward, but history and current European form strongly favour the visitors. Leverkusen have won all four previous European meetings with Polish opposition and possess considerably greater depth and experience at this level.
