Match Preview
RB Leipzig and PSV Eindhoven meet at the Red Bull Arena as both sides still search for their first Champions League win of the campaign. Leipzig opened with a heavy 4-1 defeat away to Como, while PSV drew 1-1 at home with Shakhtar Donetsk.
Leipzig’s start was particularly damaging, with Andrija Maksimović scoring their only goal in Italy as defensive problems resurfaced. Their wider European record remains poor: they've lost eight of their last nine Champions League matches and have gone 19 consecutive UEFA club matches without keeping a clean sheet.
Domestic form offers considerably more encouragement. Martín Demichelis’s side thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 at the weekend and have won all three home matches this season, extending a broader unbeaten run at the Red Bull Arena to 10 games in all competitions.
PSV prepared with a 2-0 victory over Heerenveen and have now won six of their last nine competitive matches. Guus Til has been particularly productive, scoring five times in his last six PSV appearances, including four away goals.
Their European away record in Germany is much less reassuring. PSV have never won away to German opposition in the European Cup or Champions League, drawing three and losing seven of 10 visits, while their broader record against German sides in the competition stands at only three victories from 20 matches.
Both teams favour proactive pressing, with PSV and Leipzig ranking among the leading sides for high-intensity pressing in the opposition half on matchday one. Given Leipzig’s vulnerability without the ball and PSV’s long run without a Champions League clean sheet, this has the ingredients for an open contest.
