Match Preview
Telstar and Cambuur meet at the BUKO Stadion with both sides under pressure to arrest difficult starts. Telstar sit 14th with three points from three matches, while newly promoted Cambuur remain bottom after losing all four of their Eredivisie fixtures.
Henk Brugge’s side were beaten 4-0 at home by Ajax last weekend, although they kept the contest relatively tight until the latter stages. Steven Berghuis eventually inspired Ajax’s breakthrough, while Rui Mendes passed up Telstar’s best opportunity when Marc-André ter Stegen denied him early in the second half.
The defeat means Telstar have now lost both of their home games, conceding seven times in the process. They have also gone six matches without a clean sheet, with Ronald Koeman Jr. averaging 4.7 saves per game, the third-highest figure in the competition, underlining how much pressure their defence has been absorbing.
Cambuur’s problems are more severe. Johan Plat’s side suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Twente last time out and have now conceded 16 goals in four league matches. Defensive passivity and poor spacing again proved costly, as Twente repeatedly exploited the central and wide areas before Ilyes Hamache scored a late consolation.
There are still some attacking positives for the visitors, particularly through Rafik El Arguioui, who has scored three of Cambuur’s four league goals. They have also enjoyed an excellent recent record in this fixture, going unbeaten in the last eight meetings with Telstar and winning seven of them.
That head-to-head record gives Cambuur some encouragement, but current form points elsewhere. Telstar have at least shown they can win at this level, having beaten NEC away on the opening weekend, while Cambuur’s defensive record remains the worst in the division. With both teams likely to see this as an important opportunity for points, the contest should be more open than Telstar’s meeting with Ajax.
