Match Preview
Villarreal and Napoli meet at La Cerámica with both sides still searching for their first Champions League points of the season. Villarreal opened with a 3-2 defeat away to Borussia Dortmund, while Napoli were beaten 1-0 at home by Arsenal and still await their first goal of the league phase.
The hosts at least showed attacking threat in Dortmund, with Santiago Mouriño finding the net, but their wider European form remains troubling. Villarreal are winless in their last 12 Champions League matches and have lost seven in succession, meaning another defeat would set an unwanted record for a Spanish club in the competition.
Napoli’s European numbers are similarly uncomfortable. Massimiliano Allegri’s side produced only 0.22 expected goals against Arsenal, the lowest figure of any team on matchday one, and they have not won any of their last six Champions League away fixtures. Their record against Spanish opposition is also poor, with no victory in the last eight such matches in this competition.
Both teams arrive after contrasting domestic weekends. Villarreal lost 1-0 at Real Madrid despite having 53% possession and 16 attempts, while Napoli eased past Frosinone 3-0, with Kevin De Bruyne scoring twice and Noa Lang also on target. Scott McTominay’s return as a substitute after heart surgery was another significant boost for the Italian side.
History offers Napoli some encouragement. The clubs have met six times overall with two wins apiece and two draws, but Napoli won both previous Champions League encounters 2-0 during the 2011-12 group stage. Those remain their only victories against Spanish opposition in the European Cup or Champions League.
Neither side looks especially reliable in this competition, but Napoli enter with greater momentum and more proven attacking quality. Villarreal should be competitive at home, especially after troubling Real Madrid, yet Allegri’s side appear better equipped to capitalise if the hosts’ long winless run in the Champions League starts to weigh on them.
