Willem II and Fortuna Sittard meet in Tilburg with both sides looking to recover from heavy defeats against Ajax. John Stegeman’s hosts remain 17th with two points from six matches and are still searching for their first league win, while Fortuna sit seventh on 10 points despite losing two of their last three.

Willem II were comprehensively beaten 5-1 at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Tuesday. They remained compact for much of the first half but conceded twice before the interval, after which Ajax’s depth and movement overwhelmed them. Alessandro Ciranni scored a consolation, while goalkeeper Maxime Delanghe prevented an even heavier defeat with eight saves.

That result extended Willem II’s winless start and took their goals-against tally to 19 in six matches, an average of more than three per game. Devin Haen remains their main attacking threat with three goals, while Uriël van Aalst and Nathan Tjoe-A-On have each supplied two assists.

Fortuna were themselves beaten 5-1 at home by Ajax last weekend after briefly making it 1-1. Their defensive structure then unravelled, particularly from set-pieces, with three of Ajax’s goals coming from corners as Danny Buijs’s side struggled to cope with rapid switches of play and sustained pressure.

Despite that setback, Fortuna’s wider start has been considerably stronger. They have won three of six league games and remain unbeaten away from home, collecting seven points from three matches. Mohamed Ihattaren and Lequincio Zeefuik have both scored three times, giving the visitors more established attacking threats than their hosts.

With both teams coming off five-goal defeats, defensive confidence is likely to be fragile. Willem II desperately need points, but Fortuna’s superior form, stronger away record and greater attacking productivity should give Buijs’s side the better chance of recovering.
