Ajax begin another attempt to re-establish themselves among the Eredivisie’s leading sides with a trip to MAC³PARK Stadion to face PEC Zwolle. After finishing fifth last season with 56 points, the Amsterdam club enter 2026/27 under Míchel, who left Girona this summer to become Ajax’s third permanent head coach in as many seasons. Zwolle, meanwhile, will hope for greater stability after finishing 15th and only narrowly avoiding the relegation play-off places.
The hosts’ survival last season owed much to their performances in Zwolle. Henry van der Vegt’s side collected 28 of their 37 points at MAC³PARK Stadion, winning eight of their 17 home matches, compared with just one victory away. Defensive vulnerability nevertheless remained a major problem throughout the campaign, with their 71 goals conceded equating to more than two per league game.
Ajax’s fifth-place finish represented another underwhelming campaign by their traditional standards. They won only 14 of 34 league matches and drew the same number, although a +21 goal difference and just six defeats illustrated how often an inability to turn competitive performances into victories proved costly. They were particularly difficult to beat away from home, losing just twice in 17 league trips but drawing 10.
Míchel therefore inherits a side requiring evolution rather than wholesale reconstruction, although Ajax have made several eye-catching additions. Julian Brandt and Marc-André ter Stegen are among those who have arrived this summer, significantly increasing the experience available to the new coach, although both are expected to begin the opening fixture on the bench.
Recent history provides Ajax with further encouragement. Zwolle have failed to win any of their last six home meetings with the Amsterdam club, losing five and drawing one. Ajax have also avoided defeat in 16 of their previous 20 Eredivisie away fixtures, whereas Zwolle’s broader record of 12 winless matches from their last 15 in all competitions illustrates the challenge facing the hosts.
